Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a major health publication shows that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these treatments need to be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
People who have stopped the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is greater among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural management.
