Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
